Helping both visitors and locals explore the newly renovated Seattle Waterfront.

Seattle Waterfront: Symbol Set Design

The waterfront of Seattle is currently undergoing intense renovation. Central to this transformation is an innovative wayfinding system that draws inspiration from the region’s rich natural ecosystem. I created a potential system where each street will be represented by an icon of an indigenous animal or plant species.

For visitors, these icons provide a unique and memorable way to explore the waterfront, enhancing their experience and understanding of Seattle’s natural heritage. For residents, it fosters a sense of pride and connection to their city’s ecological identity.

Research

The Seattle Waterfront has several established places that are tourist attractions. These include Union St, Overlook Walk, Pier 62 & 63, Alaskan Way/Elliot Way, Pier 58, Marion St. Bridge, Pioneer Square, and Pike and Pine Street.

Initial Ideation

While brainstorming and making initial sketches, I identified potential avenues of thought and narrowed them down into three cohesive sets.

Iteration

Refinement for the symbols themselves continued, as well as ideation for how to present and produce them. My final set was based on geometry and the natural environment.
